Disobeying a traffic control device, running a stop sign, running a red light in New York
In New York there are several different tickets an officer might write about traffic control devices. These include violating rules around stop signs, yield signs, traffic lights including flashing yellow lights and flashing red lights, including lights at railroad crossings and on school buses. Here are some of vehicle and traffic laws that deal with traffic control devices, and some potential consequences on a first offense:
1110(a), failed to obey traffic control device: this is the most generic of these laws, and is sometimes used as part of a plea bargain from a more serious offense. Fines range up to $150, with two points.
1111(a), failed to yield right of way on a green light: fines up to $150, with three points.
1111(a)(2), failed to yield green arrow: up to $150 fine, plus three points.
1111(d)(1), passed a red light: fine up to $225, plus three points.
1111(d)(2a) and 1111(d)(2b), failed to yield right (or left) on red: up to $150 fine and three points
1113(a), passed flashing red light: $150 and three points
1170(a), failed to stop at railroad crossing: as much as $150, but also five points
1172(a), failed to stop at stop sign: $150 and three points
1174(a), failed to stop for school bus: up to $400 along with five points.. Keep in mind that being found guilty of this charge three times in three years results in automatic revocation of your license.
