April showers bring . . . traffic tickets!
A funny thing happens in the spring: the number of calls to Selby Legal about traffic tickets always goes up. It’s true that police officers don’t like standing outside in bad weather any more than anyone else, but rain and snow also can make the signal from radar or laser devices less reliable. If you’re pulled over in bad weather, making note of the conditions at the time of the stop is good practice.
On the other hand, DMV statistics indicate that fewer tickets are written in winter months, and that May is the busiest month of all for our law enforcement colleagues. Is this because drivers are just more likely to speed when they hit the open road on a nice spring day, or does the temperature play a part? It’s impossible to say for sure, but after the April showers, May tickets bloom like crazy.
