Here's why you shouldn't cut through a gas station to avoid a red light

Driving through a parking lot, alley, or corner lot to avoid having to stop at a traffic light or stop sign is known as “rat running” and yes, in New York it’s also illegal. Avoiding a traffic control device or intersection is a two-point violation, which is reason enough not to plead guilty if you get a ticket like this. Judges can also assess a fine of up to $243 for a first offense. If you’re in the habit of taking shortcuts like this, that fine can be as high as $543 if you get ticketed a third time within 18 months.

This isn’t to say that “rat running” isn’t common or understandable, but taking that shortcut to avoid a stop sign or traffic light is illegal. If a police officer gives you a ticket for this or any other charge, call Selby Legal for a free consultation.
