"I got an eight-point speeding ticket on the Mid-Hudson Bridge! What do I do now?"

The Mid-Hudson Bridge has one of the most notorious speed traps in all of Ulster County. Aproaching from the west bank of the Hudson River, a driver might be fooled by the gentle curve of the two-lane road into believing that the speed limit is 40 mph or higher, but it’s actually an extremely low 25 mph. State troopers who set up their radar guns just around the bend can write very serious speeding tickets for what feels like low-speed driving. Without even feeling like you were driving dangerously fast, you can find yourself with a ticket for driving 45 or 55 mph in a 25 mph zone. Driving at 56 mph can get you an eight-point ticket, which is a very serious offense.

I practice regularly in the Lloyd town court, where these tickets are prosecuted, and I’ve known these judges and prosecutors for years. This means that have a good idea of what kind of deals they might accept, and which technicalities can be exploited to try to get a case dismissed. (I also practice in Poughkeepsie, at the other end of the Mid-Hudson Bridge, but the approach doesn’t have the same kind of speed trap on that side.)
